Short answer. On Android, turn off Media visibility (WhatsApp › Settings › Chats). On iPhone, turn off Save to Photos (WhatsApp › Settings › Chats). Both can also be switched off for a single chat. That stops new photos landing in your gallery; the ones already saved stay there until you move or delete them.
Stop WhatsApp saving photos on Android
- In WhatsApp, tap More options (⋮) › Settings › Chats.
- Turn off Media visibility.
Just one chat: open the chat, tap the contact or group name, tap Media visibility and choose No.
Stop WhatsApp saving photos on iPhone
- In WhatsApp, tap Settings › Chats.
- Turn off Save to Photos.
Just one chat: open the chat, tap the contact or group name, tap Save to Photos and choose Never.
What about photos already in your gallery?
The setting only affects new media. Photos and videos saved before stay in your gallery:
- iPhone: they are ordinary photos in the Photos app. Delete them there (and empty Recently Deleted), or move them to the Hidden album.
- Android: they live in a “WhatsApp Images” or “WhatsApp Video” album. Delete them in your gallery, or move them to Google Photos’ Locked Folder or Samsung’s Secure Folder.
- Cloud copies: if Google Photos or iCloud Photos backed them up, delete them there too.
Deleting from your gallery doesn’t delete them from the chat; they stay in WhatsApp until you delete the messages.
For photos you want to keep, privately
Keeping photos inside WhatsApp still leaves them one tap away for anyone who opens the chat. For photos you want to keep but never want seen, move them into a vault: encrypted on the phone, with its own PIN, and nothing on the phone that says “vault”. How to hide photos on iPhone and Android compares every option, and our seven checks show how to choose a vault app.
Frequently asked questions
Why does WhatsApp save photos to my gallery?
Media visibility (Android) and Save to Photos (iPhone) are on by default, so received photos and videos are copied to your gallery.
Can I hide WhatsApp photos for one chat only?
Yes. Open the chat, tap the contact or group name, and set Media visibility to No (Android) or Save to Photos to Never (iPhone).
If I turn off Media visibility, are the photos deleted?
No. New photos simply stop appearing in your gallery. They are still in the chat, and photos saved before stay in your gallery.
Does view once keep photos out of the gallery?
Yes. View-once photos and videos are never saved to the gallery and disappear from the chat after they are opened.
